Learning Rehabilitation Mode of Respect, Self-determination and Participation

     The characteristics of female inmates in the Institute are passionate, vigorous, self-independent, incentive and willing to seek self-development. The Rehabilitation Institute provides multiple learning opportunities for female inmates to acquire new knowledge and growth impetus. Hence, the Institute wants to be an institute of learning apparatus, which, responding to physical and mental character as well as necessity for female inmates, will select suitable rehabilitation programs to cope with right symptoms so that rehabilitation effect can be thus escalated.

  1. Arts talent and learning programs:In order to increase humanistic education and cultivate healthy recreational life for inmates, the Institute sets up many programs of arts for inmates to attend, such as Chi martial art, calligraphy, Chinese painting, mind development writing, aborigine traditional arts, book reading, illiterate adult reading, gardening, dancing and recreation cheering etc.
  2. Religious belief: In cooperation with religious groups from the society, religion belief is capable to get rid off addiction. In last period of rehabilitation, inmates, according to individual religion belief, can receive guidance from their religion and establish good relationship that will lay the foundation for the confirmation of their belief. When they are released from the Institute and remain the connection with religious groups, this will help to overcome the crisis of recommitment after returning to the society. The Institute invites religion figures from Buddhism, Catholic Church and Protestant Churches to come and host classes. In addition rehabilitation programs, Pastor Dong Yue-Chun from Christian After-care Congregation opens a Bible class, Catholic Group opens a Reverence class, and Buddhist group, like De-Shan Temple, is also contributing grave efforts to edify the inmates.
  3. Recreational activities: Female inmates in the Institute are very vigorous and passionate, and are willing to learn. If only Rehabilitation Institute can provide learning opportunities, they are certainly able to gain new knowledge and development momentum. They can demonstrate amazing creativeness and energy as well. The Institute has held recreational activities such as environmental fashion show, creative fashion show, cheer squad contest, team chanting contest, talent contest in lunar New Year party, choir contest, recitation contest and karaoke contest etc. The inmates are doing pretty well in these events.
  4. Special group therapy for female rehabilitation: Clinic psychiatrist applies professional scale in clinic psychology to perform relevant psychological assessment for inmates of each period. The assessment demonstrates problem indicators for inmates and makes plans of different group therapies for rehabilitation that come out of assessment result. Conjoining social resources like Bodhisattva Line and Life Line, and academic institutes such as Department and Graduate Institute of Criminology, Chung Cheng University and Department of Social Work, Asia University, the Institute consecutively holds group therapies such as Rehabilitation Group in 12 Steps, Trauma Curing Group, Family Remolding Group, Self-exploration Group, Cognitive Reconstruction Therapy Group, Insomnia Therapy Group, Self-confirmation Group, Sunshine Achievement Group and Emotion Management Group.
  5. Family education class: Regarding that female inmates pay more attention to family relationship and that there is obvious connection that family support system has much to do with the inmates when they return to the society and refrain from recommitment, the institute always hopes that, with the implementation of family education class, family relationship of inmates can be improved, that family support can be promoted, and that inmates can focus on learning so that they can return to the society smoothly. Currently, the Institute is using “Family Education Plan for Inmates” from American Inmate Family Foundation, hoping to help that the inmates maintain good family relationship while serving term in rehabilitation and that they can return to home and the society smoothly after being released from the Institute. The Institute also helps families to reaccept and support inmates.
  6. Employment guidance: Employment Services Center, Taichung Changhua Nantou Region, Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training, Council of Labor Affairs is pushing forward the employment of ex-inmates as annual important task. Many employment services and vocational training programs are provided by means of cooperation among various prisons, rehab institutes and civilian groups. The Institute invites experts from Employment Services Center, Taichung Changhua Nantou Region to coming to us once a month to hold classes for the inmates, in which related employment services and vocational training resources are provided. In the classes, employment market is analyzed and job seeking techniques and working attitudes are introduced and enhanced for the inmates who will look for jobs after discharge from the Institute. We expect that inmates can extensively keep in touch with employment services and resources related with vocational training so that they are fully aware of employment market and they can be well prepared with proper work attitude and basic vocational capability to apply for jobs in the future. This can fulfill our objective that inmates are assisted to resume employment smoothly.
