Background

      Restorative justice is a kind of alternative justice. Within the original judicial principles, with the change in perspective, victims’ interests are addressed. It also emphasizes offenders’ responsibility for their crimes by remedying the harms they caused. It is hoped to encourage the interaction and conversation between offenders and victims to soothe the pains.

Goals

1. To help inmates understand the spirit of restorative justice and apply it in daily life.
2. To help inmates promote their empathy and learn how to take responsibility.
3. To link up with external resources to enhance the depths and horizons of restorative justice.
4. To continue to enhance the professional knowledge of seed personnel on restorative justice.

The execution of restorative justice in our prison

      To consolidate the promotion of restorative justice,our prison has collaborated with the Restorative Justice Group of Taichung District Prosecutors Office, Association of Victim Support (Taichung Branch), Prison Fellowship Taiwan (Taichung Branch), Legal Aid Foundation, and more to conduct projects and schemes related to restorative justice since 2010. We also invite experts to present speeches, and conduct mulberry tree project courses, advanced groups, study groups, referral of inmate conversation application cases and so on.
      With the training of seed personnel, the provision of courses and referrals, our prison expects to help inmates understand the spirit and meaning of restorative justice. We endeavor to practice restorative justice active to achieve didactic goals.
